A dog’s or cat’s weight can help guide the choice of a pet urn. For a professional, however, it is a starting point: the final choice should take account of the volume of ashes to be accommodated and the usable capacity of the chosen model.
How can your team use this information? The following approach helps you prepare a selection and give families clear explanations.
Weight provides guidance, not an exact conversion
A description such as “for pets up to 10 kg” helps identify a possible model. It does not replace confirmation of the actual requirement with the crematorium team.
Weight-to-capacity charts are estimates. Before confirming an urn, check the cremation provider’s recommendation, particularly when an animal is close to the weight limit stated for a model.
Show the weight guidance and the capacity in litres separately in your product information.
Check the compartment intended for ashes
External dimensions alone do not tell you how much an urn can hold. Wall thickness, the closure or a decorative compartment may take up some of the space.
Ask the supplier for the usable capacity of the ashes compartment. If the ashes are to remain in a sealed bag, also check the opening dimensions and the space available to position the bag correctly.
This is especially useful when considering a decorative urn with several components.
Compare capacities in litres or millilitres
Using the same unit makes comparisons easier: one litre equals 1,000 millilitres.
The two capacities provided for the SOUL GARDEN range are 0.83 L and 1.68 L, equivalent to 830 ml and 1,680 ml. Compare these with the requirement confirmed by the crematorium.
Consider a hypothetical example: if the professional confirms a volume of 600 ml, a usable capacity of 830 ml exceeds that volume. The bag still needs to fit through the opening and sit correctly inside. If the requirement is 1,800 ml, a capacity of 1,680 ml is insufficient.
These examples compare volumes only. They are not a chart linking an animal’s weight to an urn size.
Confirm what the urn needs to hold
Will the urn hold all of the ashes or only a portion, according to the family’s wishes? Clarify this before choosing the model.
If the family would like to include a personal keepsake in the same urn, check that a suitable space is available. Do not automatically treat the ashes compartment as additional storage.
Once capacity has been confirmed, the family can consider the shape, material and personalisation options.
Prepare a reference sheet for your team
For each model, record the usable capacity, dimensions, opening, closure method and supplier information.
Before confirming a personalised order, have the capacity choice checked and record the selected reference. A shared reference sheet helps colleagues find consistent information.
