Solid wood can give a pet urn a warm, understated appearance. For a pet crematorium or pet funeral service, that appearance should be supported by clear information about how the model is made and used.
Before adding a collection to your range, a sample lets you examine the product closely. The following checks provide a practical starting point.
Identify the materials precisely
Ask which wood species is used and what each part of the urn is made from, including the sides, base, lid and any decorative compartment.
A photograph alone cannot confirm that an entire model is made from solid wood. The supplier’s description should identify the materials used and where they are fitted.
Also distinguish the place where the urn is manufactured from the origin of the timber. These are separate pieces of information.
Examine the finish closely
Inspect the front, sides, corners and underside. Look for a surface that feels smooth, without splinters, visible adhesive residue or distracting sanding marks.
View the sample in natural light to assess its colour and finish. Grain patterns and tonal differences are part of wood’s appearance; they should be distinguished from cracks or poorly fitted joints.
Ask the supplier which variations are normal within the collection and how to report a product that falls outside the agreed finish quality.
Check construction and stability
Place the sample on a flat surface. Check that it sits securely and that the components fit correctly.
Examine the joints and handle any removable parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should be able to use them without forcing them or damaging the finish.
For decorative models, also check how the different elements sit together. Your team needs to feel confident when presenting and handling the urn.
Understand the closure and ashes compartment
A discreet closure should still be straightforward for the colleagues responsible for filling the urn. Ask for instructions explaining how to access the ashes compartment and close it.
Check the usable capacity, opening and space available for the ashes packaging used by your establishment.
Do not assume an urn is watertight because of its appearance or material. Any particular performance claim should be explicitly documented by the supplier.
Assess personalisation
If you offer engraving or a plaque, examine an example made on the relevant model. Check legibility, positioning and how it looks against the wood.
Before ordering, agree which information must be provided, how the wording is approved and how an error would be handled. Clear presentation of the options helps avoid promising personalisation that is unavailable.
Request care and storage advice
Wood exchanges moisture with the surrounding air, which can lead to dimensional changes. Ask for the use and storage conditions appropriate to the model and its finish.
Clarify the recommended cleaning method, permitted products and precautions regarding water or heat. Pass on the care instructions for the specific product supplied to the family.
